The present article presents a fashionable variation of the Gruenfeld Defence, which helped German GM Matthias Bluebaum to score an important victory in the European Championship 2022 and to become European Champion 2022.

In this variation of the Grunfeld White sacrifices a pawn for a long-term initiative and to avoid suffering Black needs to know exactly what to do.

The fact that in the same tournament few rounds later Black repeated the whole line and prepared a novelty on move 28 shows how quickly the theory can develop these days.
