I have an in-depth look at the fascinating first game of the match between Tan Zhongyi and Lei Tingjie, which featured a sideline of the English Opening (1.c4 e5 2.d3).
Pretty soon after the theoretical waters were left behind, play became incredibly sharp, with Black having a long-term advantage on the queenside with her three extra pawns. White’s majority in the centre failed to impress, but White got eventually some counterplay against the black king. What a start of this mini match (six games only!) which should determine the challenger of reigning World Champion Ju Wenjun.
Exercise: In the game, Black made a serious error here. How should Black play instead and obtain a decisive advantage?
