Robert Ris' Fast and Furious: A fine miniature

by Robert Ris
9/19/2025 – In his new Fast & Furious show, Robert Ris looks at the game N. Yakubboev vs A. Demchenko from the Grand Swiss in Samarkand, which illustrates how it is still possible to be creative and bold in the opening: White sacrificed his bishop on move 8 (!) and went on to win a fine miniature. | Fast & Furious is available on-demand with a ChessBase Premium Account. This video course offers you a complete, clear repertoire for Black against the moves 1.Nf3 and 1.c4. The recommended variations are easy to learn and not difficult to remember, but also pose White serious challenges.

Robert Ris: "I have an in-depth look at the 23-move miniature from the game Yakubboev–Demchenko. In a relatively quiet line of the Queen's Gambit Accepted, White sacrificed his bishop on f7 as early as move 8!

The idea itself is not new and, theoretically speaking, still fine for Black, but it was enough to catch his opponent by surprise. Possibly Demchenko mixed up the move order, and so Black ended up in a lost position already by move 12."

Exercise: How should Black respond to White's threats?

Feel free to move the pieces on the live diagram!
