CNN Money blitz interview with Nakamura

10/2/2015 – Red Bull’s marketing department is easily one of the most powerful and astute in the world, and they sponsor no fewer than 600 athletes in the world, in a wide variety of fields. One of their most recent forays is into a resurgent chess in the United States as they added Hikaru Nakamura to their numbers. Here is a quick video interview on CNN Money.

With a brand name like Red Bull backing him up, it is no surprise CNN Money took an interest

Nakamura is quick, to the point, with a bit of swagger as befits a top player. He recalls one
of his greatest moments as the time he became the first to beat Bobby Fischer’s record as the
youngest GM in US History, a record since overtaken by Roy Robson and Samuel Sevian. He also
humbly admits his most painful moments would be one of his losses to Magnus Carlsen.

Red Bull Stratos

Listing the many athletes who enjoy sponsorship by Red Bull would not begin to tell the tale of the effectiveness of their marketing. Their highest profile partnership was the Red Bull Stratos, on October 14, 2012, in which Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner fell from an altitude of 39 kilometers, breaking several world records, including breaking the speed barrier without any form of engine power as his drop to earth reached 1357 km/h (Mach 1.25). The event was followed by over 9.5 million people live on YouTube as it took place, also a record.

Born in the US, he grew up in Paris, France, where he completed his Baccalaureat, and after college moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He had a peak rating of 2240 FIDE, and was a key designer of Chess Assistant 6. In 2010 he joined the ChessBase family as an editor and writer at ChessBase News. He is also a passionate photographer with work appearing in numerous publications, and the content creator of the YouTube channel, Chess & Tech.
