The new sole leader of the Grandmaster Triathlon in Biel is Vincent Keymer. The youngest participant in the competition, at 18 years of age, beat top seed Yu Yangyi and was thus able to leave former co-leader Navara behind in the standings. The latter signed his third consecutive draw, this time against Bogdan-Daniel Deac. Jules Moussard and Bassem Amin also drew.
Le Quang Liem is now in third place. The defending champion bounced back from round-3’s defeat as he got the better of Arjun Erigaisi in convincing style.
Key Concepts of Chess - Pawn Structures Vol.1 and 2
In this two-part course the emphasis will be on typical pawn-structures.
With his three wins from four classical games, one of them with black, Le totals 12 points and is thus currently the most successful player in this category. Unlike Le, however, Keymer and Navara have yet to lose a single classical game (Keymer scored two wins and two draws, while Navara scored one win and three draws). Combined with their strong performances in the rapid, Keymer and Navara managed to become the frontrunners in the festival’s main event.

The nominally strongest player in the field, China’s Bu Xiangzhi, won his game against former sole leader Liu Yan — also from China — to take the top spot in the standings of the Master Tournament (MTO). Bu is now the only player with 4½ points after five rounds, ahead of no fewer than eight pursuers with 4 points each.

When so many games are played daily, it is inevitable that a few particularly outstanding encounters take place. To highlight these games, the organisers of the Biel Chess Festival have created the Beauty Award.
Every evening after the rounds are over, the most attractive game from the MTO, HTO and ATO can be voted for on the festival’s social media channels. The winners have the opportunity to present their game on the live stream the following day and receive a small gift.
The winners are showcased on the official website. You can replay the winners from the first four rounds below.
