Bamberg 1968, Round 3: Keres and Petrosian take the lead

6/25/2020 – Tigran Petrosian and Paul Keres are the favourites at the jubilee tournament of the SC Bamberg and after three rounds the two Soviet players have indeed taken the lead. In round 3 Petrosian won with a fine exchange sacrifice against Andreas Dückstein, while Keres won a long, technical but basically unproblematic game against Jürgen Teufel, who blundered in the opening. Keres and Petrosian thus share first place with 2½/3 each, while Milko Bobotsov, Borislav Ivkov and Jan Hein Donner follow half a point behind with 2.0/0 each. | Photo: Tigran Petrosian (Archive)

World Champion Tigran Petrosian is known for his caution and his defensive skills. But he is also famous for his exchange sacrifices. In round three Petrosian had Black against Andreas Dückstein and was happy to try his trademark sacrifice once again. Dückstein did not know what to do with his material plus and was gradually outplayed.

 

Paul Keres won in an entirely different way. He played with White against Jürgen Teufel and after an opening inaccuracy by the German Keres was soon two pawns up. Teufel managed to regain one of the pawns but wound up in a cheerless knight ending which Keres patiently converted to a win.

 

Lothar Schmid scored the third win of the day after beating Klaus Klundt in a wild tactical battle.

 

Tactics also dominated the game between Heikki Westerinen and Helmut Pfleger – but this game ended peacefully.

 

Hans-Günther Kestler, who played with White against Laszlo Szabo, also had to content himself with a draw – after missing a couple of good chances to beat the Hungarian Grandmaster.
