Andrew Martin: The Blumenfeld Gambit

This opening is all about the centre: who will be the first to dominate this important area of the board? A fierce, immediate fight breaks out, and if either player does not know what to do, a crushing defeat could be the result. This opening is ideal for club and tournament players.

Benjamin Markovich Blumenfeld was born in 1884 in Volkovysk, at the time part of the Russian Empire, today in Belarus. In 1905/06 he tied for second/third with Akiba Rubinstein, behind Gersz Salwe, in St. Petersburg (the fourth Russian championship). In 1907 he tied for second/third with Georg Marco, behind Mikhail Chigorin, in Moscow.

In 1920 he took eighth in Moscow (Russian Chess Olympiad, 1st URS-ch). The event was won by Alexander Alekhine. In 1925 he tied for second/third with Boris Verlinsky, behind Aleksandr Sergeyev, in the Moscow championship.

He has won various national and international tournaments and was a commentator on the chess world championship between Kasparov and Kramnik in 2000. He is known as a professional chess teacher and head trainer of the English youth team. He is a chess columnist, an author of chess books and various instructional videos. He was the publisher of the series Trends Publications. Andrew Martin has recorded extensively for Chessbase since 2004.
