Anand ambassador of WWF India

4/21/2020 – With delight, the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) confirmed that the five time World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand joined the conservation organization as an ambassador for the environment education programme. Anand brings youth closer to nature

Viswanathan Anand knows very well how important it is to make an environmental effort. For many years he has been trying to educate people about leaving a green footprint. The following clip is from 2009. 

For the 50-year anniversary of the WWF India, Anand joined the organization as the education ambassador, posting a twitter comment about his decision.

Meanwhile, WWF India posted a nice statement about the new collaboration on Facebook.

Anand is the greatest chess celebrity India has and was honoured many times. He was the first and only "chess athlete" to receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1991–92, which is considered to be the highest sporting honour of India. Furthermore, Anand is the very first sportsperson ever to receive the Padma Vibhushan Award, an award for exceptional and distinguished service.

Viswanathan Anand, like Roger Federer or Maria Sharapova, is part of "The Foundation" in India and gifted his World Championship (Match) medal to Equation.

As a child I thought becoming World Champion would be a very cool thing. In Bonn when I won the World Championship for the third time I had a feeling of complete satisfaction. I had won the title now in every possible format. I was one of the sport’s legends. Now even the sternest critics would have to really think of what to say about me! I am very happy this medal will be used to foster equality. We win medals but here we are winning hearts and smiles. I wish the Foundation and Rahul Bose all the very best.

The first DVD with videos from Anand's chess career reflects the very beginning of that career and goes as far as 1999. It starts with his memories of how he first learned chess and shows his first great games (including those from the 1984 WCh for juniors). The high point of his early developmental phase was the winning of the 1987 WCh for juniors. After that, things continue in quick succession: the first victories over Kasparov, WCh candidate in both the FIDE and PCA cycles and the high point of the WCh match against Kasparov in 1995.
