6/7/2026 – Is winning chess championships only for the young? John Nunn has won national and international problem solving championships numerous times. Now, at the age of 70, and after a three-year pause, John wanted to see if he still had it in him. He took part in the Winton British Chess Solving Championship, and regained the title he had won ten times in the past. Incidentally, one participant in the event was almost sixty years younger than him.

6/7/2026 – Anastasiia Hnatyshyn won the European Women's Chess Championship in Batumi outright after scoring 9/11 as the 76th seed. The 15-year-old Ukrainian WFM finished half a point ahead of Sabrina Vega, Olga Badelka and Nurgyul Salimova, gained 214.4 rating points and secured the WGM title directly, along with an IM norm. 6/6/2026 – Bibisara Assaubayeva won the third Norway Chess Women tournament in her first appearance, finishing on 16½ points after securing the title with a round to spare. 6/6/2026 – Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu won the fourteenth edition of Norway Chess after beating Vincent Keymer in the final round, completing an impressive run of four consecutive classical victories. The 20-year-old from Chennai overtook Wesley So, who drew Alireza Firouzja in classical play and won the Armageddon decider to finish second. 6/6/2026 – Do you know this feeling? You often emerge from the opening with a good – or even advantageous – position, only to fail to convert your edge because you do not fully understand the resulting positions and choose the wrong middlegame strategy. Jochen Schwarz, a club player from Bremen, wants to improve in this area. To do so, he has enlisted Ivan Sokolov – through his video series *Understanding Middlegame Strategies* – as his “coach” in order to strengthen his skills. In the first installment of his series *My Sokolov Strategy*, he presents the opening episodes of this video course series.

6/5/2026 – This week there is a truly remarkable new concept in the Sicilian already on move 3! After the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 d6 the bizarre looking move 3.f3!? was played by Nihal Sarin in his game against Alexander Donchenko at the Stepan Avagyan Memorial in Armenia. Admittedly, the move isn't entirely new as it has been played by a few top GMs (including Carlsen and Nihal himself!) in some online and shorter time control games. Despite its weird appearance, this little pawn move still has some points which will be discussed in detail. Eventually the game turned into some Dragon type of position, in which Black was objectively speaking doing fine, but the German GM lost track in the middlegame and White got the chance to seize the initiative and launch a massive attack against the black king. An inspirational new approach in the heavily analyzed world of the Sicilians!

6/5/2026 – Norway Chess is arguably the strangest tournament in many years. Last week we discussed that Magnus Carlsen had already lost two games, but after eight rounds, he in fact already lost four games. This really seems to be caused by the fact that they play without increment before move 40 and with only 10 instead of 30 seconds increment after move 40. 6/5/2026 – The 14th edition of the Norway Chess super-tournament is taking place from 25 May to 5 June at Deichman Bjorvika in Oslo. An open event and a women's event are being played concurrently with an identical number of players, the same format and an equivalent prize fund. 6/5/2026 – The 25th edition of the European Women's Chess Championship is taking place from 25 May to 5 June in the Georgian city of Batumi. The tournament is played over 11 rounds using the Swiss system. More than 150 players from 32 European federations have registered to participate.
