Solved at last: who was the "Von Neumann" cheat?

4/22/2026 – Thirty-three years ago an unknown player took part in the World Open in Philadelphia. He called himself John von Neumann, beat a FIDE master, and drew grandmaster Helgi Ólafsson from Iceland. His opponents became suspicious when they heard something in his pocket buzzing. The player fled the tournament after the tournament director asked to test him. His identity was never revealed – until it has now been uncovered by Wired Magazine.

Memento mori: The chessboard and human mortality

4/21/2026 – The Latin expression memento mori, meaning "remember [that you have] to die", has long been associated with humility and reflection on the brevity of life. Chess offers a fitting metaphor for this idea: every game begins with possibilities, unfolds through choices and conflict, and ends inevitably. The clock, the sacrifices and the final checkmate all reflect the limits of time, control and ambition, turning the chessboard into a symbolic lesson on mortality and purpose. | Picture: "Allegory of Vanity" by Spanish Baroque-era painter Antonio de Pereda y Salgado

Robert Ris' Fast and Furious: Anti-Moscow Variation of the Slav

4/20/2026 – In this episode, we'll have a look at one of his three spectacular victories which was played in the second game of match. Erdogmus didn't show any fear by entering the sharp Anti-Moscow Variation of the Slav. The Bulgarian superstar is an absolute top specialist in this field and contributed massively to the development of this line 20 years ago. It seemed like White got the upper hand out of the opening, but one mistake enabled Black to come back into the game. After the exchange of queens a razorsharp position ensued in which both sides tried to promote a passed pawn. By chosing the wrong square for his king, the Bulgarian committed the decisive blunder and soon lost. An absolutely incredible fight!
