Vignir Vatnar Stefansson wins Gáldar Open on the Canary Islands

9/10/2024 – The Ciudad de Gáldar Open took place on 2-9 September in Gáldar, a Spanish town located on the Canary Islands near Las Palmas. Top seed Vignir Vatnar Stefansson from Iceland obtained outright victory after collecting 7½ points in the 9-round Swiss open. Thomas Beerdsen from the Netherlands and José Cuenca from Spain grabbed second and third place on tiebreaks, as they were 2 out of 5 players who finished the event with 7 points. | Photo: European Chess Union

Carlsen obtains 23½-7½ victory, wins Speed Chess Championship

9/9/2024 – With a crushing 23½-7½ victory over Alireza Firouzja, Magnus Carlsen became the winner of the 2024 Speed Chess Championship. This is Carlsen's fourth SCC title, as only he and Hikaru Nakamura have ever won the tournament organised by chess.com. In a major shift from the traditional structure, the 2024 World Blitz Championship will be decided through a 2-stage format. Speed Chess Championship: Carlsen and Firouzja advance to the final

9/7/2024 – Alireza Firouzja and Magnus Carlsen reached the final match of the Speed Chess Championship after obtaining clear victories over Hikaru Nakamura and Hans Niemann respectively. Firouzja's play was impressive and left Nakamura out of an SCC final for the first time in history, while Carlsen was always in control in his match against Niemann. Ganguly beats Shankland in match with Venceslav Rutar's scoring system

9/5/2024 – Surya Shekhar Ganguly defeated Sam Shankland in their 8-game online match with the unique scoring system devised by Venceslav Rutar - which changes the scoring of draws into three categories based on the material disparity. Surya won the match by a 26-11 score, after grabbing 5 wins. Shankland collected 1 win, and 3 games ended in 'equal draws'. While there were no 'favoured' nor 'unfavoured' draws in the match, the format advocated for fighting chess as we got to see so many interesting games.

Chess.com Speedchess Championship 2024: Niemann and Carlsen clash in Paris

9/4/2024 – On Friday 6th September at 20:00 CEST in Paris an explosive duel that the chess world has been waiting for for weeks will begin: Hans Niemann will face Magnus Carlsen in the semi-finals of the chess.com Speedchess Championship. After his defeat against Niemann in the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, Carlsen indirectly accused Niemann of cheating, which led to heated discussions, headlines around the world and a defamation suit by Niemann. Alireza Firouzja will play Hikaru Nakamura in the second semi-final. The four finalists in Paris will play online on the computer, but will face each other live.
