Grivas on Ding-Gukesh games 7-9

12/6/2024 – After the second rest day, three draws followed in the FIDE World Championship 2024, making the match score 4½-4½. D. Gukesh missed good chances to prevail in games seven and eight, while game nine was probably the ‘quietest’ and most ‘correct’ game of the championship. We are entering the dangerous zone, where every mistake counts double, as there are only six games remaining. The general feeling by now is that D. Gukesh has lost more chances to take the lead than his opponent, and he is fighting more (even sometimes unjustifiably) to take the initiative. My takes. | All photos by Maria Emelianova

Elections in the Greek Chess Federation

12/5/2024 – On December 15, elections will be held within the Greek Chess Federation to elect its new Presidential Board. From 1982 to 2021, the President of the Federation was Mr. Giorgos Makropoulos (IM), who, for many years, held the position of Deputy President of FIDE. Precisely for this reason, since the legislation in Greece prohibits presidential terms for more than 12 years, he was succeeded by Mr. Stathis Efstathopoulos - from 2021 to the present - without, however, moving outside the shadow of his predecessor. Mr. Christos Pilalis (pictured), IA, FI, IO, candidate for President of the Federation, aspires to assume the responsibility of its administration, claiming that Mr. Makropoulos and his close associate Mr. Efstathopoulos, for several years, have not responded to the essential needs of Greek chess. | Photos: Christos Pilalis (private)

World Championship Game 9: A "very precise" draw

12/5/2024 – Game 9 of the World Chess Championship in Singapore brought a more measured yet strategic encounter, ending in a draw after 54 moves. Playing with the white pieces, Gukesh D applied early pressure in a Catalan Opening, but Ding Liren's precise defence kept the balance. Gukesh, who described the game as "very precise from both sides", managed to build a lead on the clock but could not capitalise in the critical moments. World Senior Championship in Portugal: The weather was good, but Kevin Spraggett was missing

ChessBase 18 error report - What is your Blunder Elo?

12/4/2024 – The error report in ChessBase is a powerful analysis tool that evaluates a player's calculation accuracy based on their performance in games. By analyzing mistakes in various situations—such as complex positions, moments of attack, or defense—the tool not only identifies error patterns but also estimates the player's Elo rating. The analysis considers factors like position complexity, game phase, and the impact of mistakes to create a detailed profile of the player's strengths and weaknesses. This makes the error report an invaluable resource for both preparing against opponents and assessing personal performance.
