FIDE Circuit 2024: Caruana seizes the lead

12/17/2024 – Fabiano Caruana has taken pole position in the 2024 FIDE Circuit race after a crucial victory at the Saint Louis Masters, edging ahead of Arjun Erigaisi by 6 points. Despite Arjun's strong second-place finish at the Qatar Masters, the Indian GM now faces an uphill climb in the year's final showdown: the World Rapid and Blitz Championships. With both players having completed seven counting tournaments, the race to claim the title will come down to the wire on New Year's Eve.

The Demis I know

12/14/2024 – On Monday the 2024 Nobel Prizes were awarded in a Stockholm, Sweden. The prize for chemistry went to three scientists, one of whom has an illustrious background in chess. Demis Hassabis was a chess prodigy with a 2300 rating at the age of 13. He founded DeepMind, a subsidiary of Google, and went on to develop the groundbreaking artificial intelligence program AlphaZero. Search for strategic topics with ChessBase 18!

12/13/2024 – Completely new possibilities for strategy training: ChessBase 18 searches games for you according to 30 (!) different strategic themes! In the new search mask you can select strategic themes from 3 categories. In the category ‘Structure’ you will find topics such as ‘Space advantage’ or ‘Majority on the queenside’. The ‘Pieces’ section deals with the value of individual pieces, i.e. ‘opposite coloured bishops’ or ‘strong rooks’. And under ‘Plans’ you can search for ‘Attack weakness’, ‘Successful defence’ or ‘King's attack’. ChessBase 18 then provides a list of games sorted according to the importance of the strategic theme and when you click on it, ChessBase 18 jumps to the relevant part of the game! 12/13/2024 – The young Russian grandmaster Andrey Esipenko (photo) won the highly competitive Qatar Masters with 7½ points after 9 rounds of play. Second and third place were shared by Arjun Erigaisi and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, each with 7 points. Arjun missed the opportunity to overtake Fabiano Caruana in the FIDE Circuit. Gukesh becomes 18th undisputed world chess champion at 18!

12/12/2024 – In a historic conclusion to the World Chess Championship in Singapore, 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju defeated reigning champion Ding Liren in the final game, becoming the youngest undisputed world chess champion in history. World Championship: Gukesh takes the title!

12/12/2024 – Gukesh D became the youngest-ever undisputed world chess champion after beating Ding Liren in the last classical encounter of their 14-game match in Singapore. Ding voluntarily entered a pawn-down endgame which was objectively drawn, but a blunder by the Chinese GM on move 55 meant Gukesh would take the title by winning the match with a 7½-6½ score. | Full report to follow shortly.

12/11/2024 – The tension in Singapore continues to mount as the World Chess Championship match heads into its final classical game with the score tied at 6.5-6.5. In a gripping 13th game, Gukesh D created significant pressure with the white pieces in a French Defence but missed critical chances to convert his advantage, allowing Ding Liren to hold a draw after 68 moves.
