Sagar Shah: Learn from the Classics (2)

1/4/2016 – This is clearly sound advice – play through the games of Alekhine, Botvinnik and Capablanca to improve your understanding of chess. But just sitting back and enjoying them does not do much for your own playing strength. Sagar Shah tells us how to actually absorb the classics, as he did, and use the ideas in one's own games. His DVD contains a wealth of historical and training material.

US master Steve Brandwein passes away at 73

1/3/2016 – Unless you are intimately familiar with the American chess scene, you will be forgiven for not knowing who Steve Brandwein is. He did not challenge for the world title, nor did he invent an opening. Rather he was one of those memorable characters that one never forgets. A chess monk, as many described him, who had his own encounters with Miguel Najdorf and Bobby Fischer.

Garry Kasparov: Winter is Coming

1/2/2016 – One thing one cannot say about the 13th World Chess Champion: that he is timid and reserved. January 2016 ratings: Magnus Carlsen is no.1

1/1/2016 – The headline might seem a tad obvious, but it should be noted that he is not only no. 1 in classical chess, he once more holds the no. 1 positions in rapid and blitz as well. Vladimir Kramnik regains the world no. 2 spot, and rejoins the 2800 club. However, a note should be made of Iranian FM Alireza Firouzja, who is 2455 and only 12 years old.

A treat to the eyes

1/1/2016 – Tactics can seem deceptively simple, particularly when seeing an engine analysing grandmaster games. Strange, however, how difficult it is to find the right move and to calculate variations properly when playing yourself. It is easier if you solve tactical puzzles regularly. In the ChessBase Magazine and his tactics column Oliver Reeh helps you to do so.

ChessBase Christmas Puzzles 2015 (7)

12/31/2015 – In 1999, in the very first installment, we gave you a proof game problem as a Christmas puzzle, one that has occupied generations of chess players. Such problems require a great deal of lateral thinking, and are not readily accessible to computer analysis. This month we nostalgically reconnected with an old friend (from the previous millennium) who specializes in such problems. Have fun with Stuart Rachels' quick mates.
