Sinquefield Cup: Fighting for spots in the revamped GCT Finals

Full Lawson on genders in chess

8/17/2025 – Recently, a 17-year-old player in Germany won the national girls’ under-18 tournament. The head of the German commission for women’s chess was less thrilled. The winner, you know, who identifies and officially categorizes as female, was born as a boy. Dominic Lawson, who writes for many major British newspapers, a strong chess player, in his words "managed to smuggle in chess as the subject" in his Sunday Times column. Riddle: Botvinnik–Boleslavsky, 1943

8/17/2025 – Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik is undoubtedly one of the towering figures in the entire history of chess, from the birth of modern chess (circa 1495) to the present day. The subject of this article is a game Botvinnik played in 1943 (while World War II was still raging) against one of the great hopes of Soviet chess at the time - and a true innovator - Isaac Boleslavsky. Botvinnik awarded his pawn sacrifice in the middlegame an exclamation mark in all his annotations. But was he correct? | Help us unravel this riddle.

Aronian secures Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz title with two rounds to spare

8/17/2025 – Levon Aronian emerged as the clear winner of the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz tournament, securing victory with two rounds to spare. The 42-year-old grandmaster demonstrated precise play throughout, prevailing over Fabiano Caruana and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who took second and third places respectively. Chennai GMs: Keymer scores yet again, Pranesh wins Challengers

8/16/2025 – Vincent Keymer concluded the Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters tournament with a commanding overall victory, finishing two points ahead of his nearest rivals after defeating Ray Robson in the final round. The result gave the 20-year-old a 2917 performance rating, a gain of over 20 Elo points, and secured his place in the live world top-10 for the first time in his career. Vladyslav Larkin wins open tournament in picturesque Wasselonne

8/15/2025 – Wasselonne is one of the many picturesque towns in France's Alsace region. The local Mossig Chess Club invited players to an open tournament. In addition to many French players, several chess enthusiasts from neighbouring Germany also accepted the invitation, including Bettina Trabert and her son Max.
