Sharjah Masters: Gukesh, Sevian and Oparin co-leaders

5/23/2023 – Round 6 of the Sharjah Masters saw Dommaraju Gukesh taking down former sole leader Haik Martirosyan with the white pieces. Sam Sevian and Grigoriy Oparin also won on Monday and are now sharing the lead with Gukesh. Women’s Grand Prix: Dinara Wagner joins the leading group

5/22/2023 – In round 6 of the Women's Grand Prix in Nicosia Dinara Wagner from Germany won against Oliwia Kiolbasa from Poland and now shares the lead with Kateryna Lagno, Harika Dronavalli and Tan Zhongyi. Top Female Chess Players to Compete in Elite Cairns Cup

5/22/2023 – A new edition of the Cairns Cup, the equivalent of the Sinquefield Cup but for top women players, will be played from 3 June. Humpy Koneru and Alexandra Kosteniuk top the women's seedings. The tournament is named after Dr Jeanne Cairns, Rex Sinquefield's wife.

Superbet Poland: Rusty Carlsen plays Polish Defence, loses

5/22/2023 – Magnus Carlsen played his first three over-the-board (rapid) games after giving up the world champion title on Sunday. In his first outing as a ‘former world champion’, Carlsen replied to Radoslaw Wojtaszek’s 1.d4 with 1...b5, going for the questionable Polish Defence — in Warsaw! The peasants’ revolt

5/21/2023 – Today I’m returning to a subject I’ve covered a number of times in the past: passed pawns. Passed pawns are a crucial aspect of chess and your attitude to them can have a profound effect on how you play and, in particular, your opening choices. To explore this topic, I look at a game played by Vasilios Kotronias, in which he was overwhelmed by an absolute pawn avalanche. The final phase is extraordinary and somewhat reminiscent of the famous game McDonnell versus De La Bourdonnais.

Experiment: Chess Camp in a mall

5/21/2023 – Our Summer Camp has completed five days, with many hundreds of new players being trained. The camp is being held at the Phoenix Marketcity Mall in Mumbai and is open to all. There are no charges and people can learn chess in a fun and engaging way, at their own pace. Trainers and volunteers help to educate the public and guide them in the right direction. 5/18/2023 – With 78 grandmasters, the Sharjah Masters kicked off on Wednesday. Most favourites scored victories, but there were a few upsets: seventh seed Ray Robson was defeated by Denis Kadric, while women’s world champion Ju Wenju got the better of Murali Karthikeyan. Ju’s win was not without ups and downs, as she first got a clear advantage, then found herself up against the ropes, and finally managed to make the most of a miscalculation by her opponent. | Photos: Official website

Sharjah 2023 with world class players

5/17/2023 – The tournament starts today, in the world's biggest chess club. The 6th Sharjah Masters 2023 is taking place from May 17th (first round) to 26th (departure). Participating are around 100 grandmaster, among them at least 30 of the world's top 100 players, making this the strongest open in history. There are a lot of young talents, players in their late teens and early twenties, with ratings around 2700. It's going to be exciting to watch.

Nicosia GP: Six (out of six) decisive results

5/17/2023 – The fourth and final stage of the Women’s Grand Prix series kicked off in Cyprus. All six round-1 games finished decisively. The biggest shocker was Dinara Wagner’s victory over Aleksandra Goryachkina — the latter entered the tournament in second place in the series’ overall ranking, only behind Zhu Jiner, who is not playing in Nicosia.
