9/19/2025 – In his new Game of the Week show, Merijn van Delft takes a look at a game by Matthias Blübaum, who won the European Individual Championship in 2022 and 2025, and recently qualified for the 2026 Candidates Tournament by finishing second at the 2025 Grand Swiss in Samarkand. One of the key moments was his win with Black against Arjun Erigaisi. | Merijn's show is available on-demand with a ChessBase Premium Account. You can register a Premium account here.

Grand Swiss: Keymer's (missed) path to victory in his final-round game against Arjun

9/19/2025 – Vincent Keymer needed a win in the final round of the FIDE Grand Swiss to get a spot in next year's Candidates Tournament, and faced second seed Arjun Erigaisi with black. The German star obtained a promising advantage but failed to find the precise continuation on several key moments, allowing Arjun to hold a draw. Below, Wolfram Schön analyses the critical points where Keymer could have pressed for more. | Photo: FIDE / Michal Walusza

Victor Bologan - 1...d6 universal - Minimal Prep & 1.e4 the lazy way

9/18/2025 – Victor Bologan’s Chess Academy Vol. 3 & 4 offers a complete, low-maintenance repertoire for both White and Black, built on the philosophy of his legendary coach Chebanenko: focus on understanding typical pawn structures and recurring piece setups rather than memorising endless theory. For Black, Bologan recommends the universal 1…d6 system, leading to flexible Philidor-style positions against 1.e4 and solid setups against 1.d4, emphasizing resilience and strategic clarity. For White, the repertoire begins with 1.e4 followed by d3, using quiet but powerful systems like the King’s Indian Attack, Closed Sicilian ideas, and anti-Caro-Kann setups—practical approaches that avoid heavy theory while still being played successfully at the highest level.

Twelve of the country’s top players will compete, nine of whom also played in the Grand Swiss, which concluded on September 15 in Samarkand. The Fritz 20 Duel: Sally Hamadeh vs. Mouse!

9/17/2025 – Sally Hamadeh from Lebanon faced the “Mouse” (Strong Club Player) of Fritz 20. Things looked grim after an early blunder cost her a piece within just a few moves. Many players might have resigned on the spot, but not Sally. True to her attacking style, she seized the initiative with a bold pawn push on the kingside. Fritz 20 gives the player a chance to find some smooth tactics, luckily. The timid mouse faltered one last time, and suddenly the tables had turned: what began with a setback ended in a sparkling checkmate!

All-in-Chess: The art and amusement of shared control

9/17/2025 – What chessplayer hasn't, when staring down disaster, dreamed of moving not their own pieces but the adversary's, swapping defeat for a sudden delicious triumph? Ever generous with impossible wishes, fairy composers have conjured just that: All-in-Chess! Here, either side may move either colour, within a few carefully chosen limits, of course. While it's possible to play entire games this way, problemists summon AIC to craft zany puzzles that twist expectations and delight the imagination. If you've got a taste for the bizarre, the brain-twisting, and the exquisitely tricky, pull up a chair — you've arrived at just the right place!

Helmut Pfleger on Maurice Ashley

9/17/2025 – In his 9/11 memorial article in the German Zeit Magazin GM Helmut Pfleger tells us how William Lombardy, the former youth world champion and, alongside Fischer, the strongest American player, bitterly complained to him during the Kasparov-Anand world championship match that began on September 11, 1995 that he had never been accorded the honour being inducted into the US Chess Hall of Fame. In 2016 Maurice Ashley, the first African-American chess grandmaster in history, did it and joined the ranks of Paul Morphy, Bobby Fischer, and Frank Marshall before him.

The Dutch-Bosnian grandmaster faced 31 opponents and showed an impressive form, scoring 30½–½. Only Jannes Haverlandt managed to withstand the pressure and secure a draw – surely an admirable achievement.

Yagiz Erdogmus: The youngest Top 100 in 36 years

9/16/2025 – It happened almost without notice, because it is so rare. Yagiz Erdogmus came swooping in and took the record for the second youngest player ever to enter the Top 100. We are conditioned to seek the youngest grandmaster or the youngest 2600 (he's that too), but actually entering the Top 100 before the age of 15 is a feat accomplished by only three players, and Erdogmus is one. | Photo: Michal Walusza/FIDE

Giri outright winner at FIDE Grand Swiss, Bluebaum grabs second Candidates spot

9/16/2025 – Anish Giri captured clear first place at the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss, scoring 8/11 and sealing victory with a final-round win over Hans Niemann to book his third appearance at the Candidates. Matthias Bluebaum's undefeated run, which included wins over Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu and Arjun Erigaisi, earned him second place on tiebreaks and Germany's first Candidates spot since Robert Hübner. Vincent Keymer narrowly missed converting a winning chance in the penultimate round and failed to make the most of an advantageous position against Arjun on Monday. | Photo: FIDE / Michal Walusza

Both players secured qualification to the 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament. In the final round, Vaishali held Tan Zhongyi to a draw with black, while Lagno drew safely against Ulviyya Fataliyeva. Bibisara Assaubayeva missed a chance to join them in a three-way tie for first, settling for third place despite an undefeated run in Samarkand. | Photo: FIDE / Michal Walusza

Svitlana's Smart Moves - Bishop vs. Knight: Who wins the endgame battle?

9/15/2025 – In this episode, Svitlana Demchenko explores bishop vs. knight endgames, showing when each piece can be stronger depending on pawn structure and king activity. Bishops excel with play on both sides of the board and outside passed pawns, while knights perform better in closed or narrow positions and against pawns fixed on the bishop’s colour. Classic examples, including Karpov and Kasparov, highlight practical rules and surprising techniques, like sacrificing pawns to open king entry routes.

Jacob Murey in Paris - A personal recollection

9/14/2025 – For many, the passing of Jacob Murey will elicit a passing nod, or barely that as a name that brings no recognition. This is fair, but for the chess community located in Paris, France, he was a deeply respected character and fixture who left an indelible mark.

ChessBase 18 – Tips for Beginners, part 31: Endgame expert with the "LiveBook"

9/14/2025 – How do you train endgames? To be honest, the question might be better phrased as: Do you even train endgames at all? After all, the magical richness of the final phase of a game is something not everyone appreciates. This makes it all the more important that training is enjoyable and not bogged down by unnecessarily long searches for the right solution. In this regard, the LiveBook feature of ChessBase 18 may not be familiar to everyone. All the more reason, then, to introduce this highly practical tool in this tutorial.

Grand Swiss: A relatively quiet day in the open, Lagno sole leader in the women's section

9/13/2025 – Round eight of the FIDE Grand Swiss tightened the race without changing the leaders, as Matthias Bluebaum and Nihal Sarin drew quickly to remain joint frontrunners. Vincent Keymer scored his fourth win of the event, this time against defending champion Vidit Gujrathi, while Jorden van Foreest claimed his first classical victory over Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. In the women's tournament, Vaishali Rameshbabu's first loss of the event allowed Kateryna Lagno (pictured) to take over the sole lead, with Bibisara Assaubayeva, Song Yuxin and Vaishali now in joint second. | Photo: FIDE / Michal Walusza
