The Monthly Dragon - Castling on move 19!

6/6/2024 – Three wonderful features are presented in the game, which Chris Ward has chosen for us. Interestingly, he found a game, in which "The ChessNerd" streamer Max Weidenhoefer lost against the Sicilian. In this particular game, a variation of the Dragadorf is used, in which the King stays in the centre for quite some time. And that can be excellent, at times! Chris explains it all in the video. | Photo: John Upham

How dangerous is chess?

6/5/2024 – It is a passionate game. There have been studies which have demonstrated that in dramatic positions with chances on both sides the adrenalin levels and the pulse rates of the players involved can rise to heights experienced by paragliders, extreme mountaineers or deep sea divers. Hence, it is not surprising that some people actually have died at the chess board when the setting became extremely stressful and prolonged.

FIDE ratings - June 2024

6/3/2024 – The FIDE has published its new world ranking list as of 1 June. There are hardly any changes at the top of the list. Magnus Carlsen (open) and Hou Yifan (women) continue to occupy the top positions. However, a number of prominent players lost a lot of points and thus also dropped down the rankings in the most recent open tournaments in Dubai and Sharjah. The name Karjakin is no longer on the list – apparently due to inactivity.

Jon Speelman: May miscellany

6/2/2024 – Study composition is one of the aspects of chess that has been both most helped and most muddied by computers. Sometimes it turns out that a study is actually unsound or at least has dual(s), and sometimes there are complications regarding the 50-move rule, for example. But if you have an idea, then it has never been easier to test it, so that a process that would once have taken days can now be finalised in mere minutes. | Photo: John Upham
