Play Sardinia World Chess Festival 2024 in Italy's strongest tournament ever with a €50100 prize fund

2/22/2024 – Unichess and Emmedi Sport ASD invite you to Sardinia World Chess Festival 2024. The inaugural edition of this festival is offering a total prize fund of €50100. The top three prizes are €10000, €6000 and €4000 each. There are three categories - Open A (>1999), Open B (<2000) and Open C (<1600). There are 15 main prizes in Open A and ten each in Open B and C. That's not all. Total 78 prizes are up for grabs. Entry is FREE for players rated above 2450. For everyone else, entry fee is €100 by 31st March €130 till 15th April after organizing committee agrees. Eleven players have 2600, 19 players above 2500, 17 GMs and 9 IMs have already confirmed participation from 15 countries across the world. The tournament is organized by UniChess (FIDE Academy tier 1-2) along with Emmedi Sport ASD. Check out the article for all information. All tournament info photos are from tournament circular.

Jan Henric Buettner: "My dream is a Grand Slam of Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenges on five continents"

2/22/2024 – Magnus Carlsen was challenged, and he won what he called his "dream tournament." The world number one rated player was crowned the winner of the inaugural Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge on Friday afternoon at the closing ceremony, held in the playing hall half an hour after the last game had ended. Tal took that pawn? Analysis by GM Daniel King

2/21/2024 – The 1959 Candidates Tournament saw an inspired Mikhail Tal emerging victorious with 20/28 points in a quadruple round-robin. On his way to victory, Tal, aged 22 at the time, defeated Bobby Fischer, aged 16, in all four of their confrontations. GM Daniel King analysed one of these games, where Tal fearlessly grabs material, allowing Fischer to create a dangerous attack. The game, along with Daniel King’s voice-over, was featured in an animation produced by Umang Mankodiya.

Vishy Anand opens Prague Chess Festival 2024

2/20/2024 – Monday 26 February 2024 is the official opening of the Prague Chess Festival 2024 and the first round will be played on Tuesday 27 February. Both the Masters and the Challengers tournaments have an interesting and strong field and with Praggnanandhaa, Gukesh, Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Vincent Keymer the four best junior players in the world will meet in Prague. Guest of honour at the opening ceremony will be Vishy Anand, who will also give a lecture and sign autographs.

Mitropa Cup: German teams lead both sections

2/20/2024 – The Mitropa Cup is taking place on February 15-23 in Apolda, Germany. Ten teams from Central Europe (also including Italy) are playing single round-robins in the open and the women’s categories. After five rounds, the German squads are leading both competitions. "A remarkably bold tournament"

2/19/2024 – Jan Henric Buettner, the driving force behind the G.O.A.T. Freestyle Challenge, had promised that the tournament in Weissenhaus would set a new milestone in the presentation of chess. This was indeed the case, and expectations were exceeded. It was the players themselves who had the most fun. The focus was not on opening knowledge, but on creativity and talent. Iivo Nei and Andreas Dueckstein awarded Honorary GM titles

2/18/2024 – The FIDE Council awarded the title of Honorary Grandmaster to Andreas Dueckstein (Austria) and Iivo Nei (Estonia) for their consistently strong results in the 1950s-70s. Nei was an 8-time Estonian who tied for first with Paul Keres in Beverwijk (later Hoogovens).
