4/16/2025 – After the 2022 Olympiad in Chennai, FIDE set up a Fair Play Commission aimed at preventing cheating in chess. The commission received sweeping powers, over and above those of the arbiters or chess tournaments. Is that necessary and justified? Malcolm Pein, writer for The Daily Telegraph, takes vigorous offence at the working of the commission in the editorial of the London-based magazine CHESS.
5/2/2024 – "We held the magazine to await the outcome of the Candidates," writes the Executive Editor of CHESS Magazine, London. 17-year-old Dommaraju Gukesh became the youngest world title challenger in the history of the game, and will take on Ding Liren later this year in the first ever all-Asian match for the world title. Malcolm has analysed a couple of games from the Candidates.

11/18/2023 – The 13th edition of the London Chess Classic will take place on December 1-10 as a 10-player single round-robin with a classical time control. The event will feature nine Super Grandmasters, including the rising star of Indian chess, Dommaraju Gukesh, and the American Hans Niemann, whose sensational victory over the then world champion Magnus Carlsen sent the chess world into turmoil.
9/6/2023 – There has been an official announcement from the UK Government of a package of measures that will support the England teams, our best juniors, new tournaments and our deaf and blind players. This is the culmination of a 25-year quest and a 12-month-long campaign. Initiator Malcolm Pein tells us how it all came about and what it means for the future of British chess.
3/16/2023 – The British chess boom reaches Parliament on Wednesday 22nd March, with two events hosted by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle. The first will be the opening ceremony of a UK vs. Ukraine Solidarity Match, with the UK number one, Michael Adams, taking on the Ukrainian champion Andrei Volokitin, who is currently living as a refugee in Poland with his family. In the second contest of the day over the board, the GMs will captain teams of MPs and Peers as they battle for bragging rights in a match between the House of Lords and House of Commons.
9/28/2022 – When chess gets featured extensively in The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Sunday Times and even VICE, while Elon Musk also weighs in and when it’s the subject of sketches by Trevor Noah and Stephen Colbert in the same week, you’d normally think this was good. This time round, in his editorial in the October issue of CHESS Magazine, Malcolm Pein is not totally sure.
