1/11/2022 – A new Russian film, written and directed by Aleksey Sidorov, called “The Champion of the World” was released on December 30. The film tells the story of the bitter rivalry between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi, focusing on their memorable match in Baguio. Eteri Kublashvili had access to the shooting and shared a number of remarkable photos and impressions on the website of the Chess Federation of Russia.
5/6/2021 – Ian Nepomniachtchi won the Candidates Tournament 2020/2021, and in November he will play against Magnus Carlsen for the world title. In an extensive interview with Eteri Kublashvili after the Candidates, Nepomniachtchi talked about his preparations for the second part of the Candidates and revealed why he once was so frustrated during his preparations that he threw his "iPhone into the wall". 12/19/2018 – The year 2018 will end with two World Chess Championships: from December 25 to December 31 the world's best players will meet in St. Petersburg to play the World Rapid and Blitz Championships. Magnus Carlsen has already declared his ambition to win both titles: "No usurpers are going to be left alive!". 9/20/2016 – Under the motto "Chess is Art" the Russian Chess Federation and the Timchenko Foundation organise important tournaments and matches in museums. In 2012 the World Championship match between Vishy Anand and Boris Gelfand was played in the Tretyakov Gallery and on Saturday the strong 10th Tal Memorial (Elo-average 2760) begins with a blitz tournament in the recently opened Museum of Russian Impressionism in Moscow.
6/10/2016 – The friendship matches between China and Russia have a long tradition. The first match was played in 2001 in Shanghai and since then Russia and China have celebrated friendship and rivalry in eight more matches in different formats and with some of the strongest players of both countries. On June 10 the tenth Russia - China match begins in Moscow. Press Release
3/4/2016 – On March 2, 2016, His Excellency Mr. Jean-Maurice Ripert, Ambassador of France in Russia, presented Andrey Filatov, President of the Russian Chess Federation, with the Legion of Honor. The award ceremony took place in the building of the first chess museum in Russia, located at 14 Boulevard Gogol in Moscow, where dignitaries were present in great pomp.
8/14/2015 – The men were rather peaceful in round 5 of the Russian Superfinals - only Ivan Bukavshin won against Ildar Khairullin, the other games were drawn. The women were less peacefully inclined - they did not play a single draw in round 5. And Anastasia Savina managed to stop Aleksandra Goryachkina who had to suffer her first loss. 8/13/2015 – Aleksandra Goryachkina, born 1998, is the number one on FIDE's August rating list for girls. At the Russian Superfinals she shows her talent. In round four she won against Anastasia Bodnaruk and now leads with 3.5/4. In the men's tournament Vladislav Artemiev won his second game in a row and now leads together with Evgeny Tomashevsky. 8/12/2015 – With a fine mix of quiet and aggressive play Evgeny Tomashevsky won against reigning champion Igor Lysyj in round three of the Russian Superfinals. He now leads the field with 2.5/3, half-a-point ahead of four players. In the women's tournament top seed Valentina Gunina showed her tactical skills and won her second game in a row. 8/10/2015 – After a quiet first round things heated up in the Russian Superfinals. In round one Karjakin was the only player to win a game, in round two three games were decided, and now four players lead with 1.5/2. The players in the women's tournament were fiercer. In the first round three games were decided, in the second round four. Goryachkina and Girya lead with 2.0/2.
8/9/2015 – On 8th August the Russian Superfinals began in Chita. Men and women play in two groups of 12 players each. All players in the men's group have a rating of 2600 or more, five of them have 2700 or more. Elo-favorite is Dmitry Jakovenko. Elo-favorite in the women's group is Valentina Gunina. But she began the tournament with a loss against Aleksandra Goryachkina.
7/1/2015 – A Children's Day is traditionally held during major chess events under the Chess in Museum program. Thanks to these master classes and simuls, young chess lovers can network with their idols in an informal setting, measure themselves up against renowned grandmasters and perhaps even beat one of them. This year the children were shown great exhibits, tours, and enjoyed lots of goodies.
6/30/2015 – The Russian Higher League is underway, bringing many of the strongest players in Russia to not only fight for a part of the five million Ruble prizefund (USD 90 thousand), but also one of the five coveted spots in the Russian Superfinal. The tournament is being held in Kaliningrad, home to Immanuel Kant, where Eteri Kublashvii has been providing lovely pictures and impressions.
6/3/2015 – The White Rook tournament in Russia has a long tradition. Established in 1969 it aims to attract young players to chess. In 2015 more than 5,500 pupils younger than 14 took part in the qualifying events that were played all over Russia. On 3 June the finals, in which Russian and international teams compete, begin in Dagomys. The opening ceremony had magical moments.
5/21/2015 – Historians estimate that the Soviet Union lost about 27 million people during World War II. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Soviet victory in World War II the Russian Chess Federation organised an exhibition in Moscow that displays documents and materials showing how chess was played during the hard times of the war. 4/14/2015 – Andrey Filatov, President of the Russian Chess Federation, likes to combine chess and art. During the transmission of the Women's World Championship in Sochi people could see a virtual exhibtion of Russian Art, and some of paintings shown there were part of the exhibition "The Legacy of WWII in Russian Art" in London that ended a few days ago. 12/9/2014 – After nine tough rounds, Lysyj took the gold. He led the event most of the way, though he was far from the pre-tournament favorite. In the women's section one of the favorites, Gunina, started the tournament on the wrong foot, but she turned things around and won the tournament.
