Nigel Short faces the FIDE Ethics Committee

5/9/2007 – Recently Nigel Short, grandmaster and chess columnist, gave an interview to the Indian newspaper DNA, in which he was critical of the activities of FIDE officials during the 2005 World Championship tournament in San Luis, Argentina. Now Nigel is being hauled before the FIDE Ethics Committee, accused of defamation. Here's a Daily Telegraph article and the Ethics Committee rules.

5/9/2007 – You probably know Levon Aronian. Well, how about Gabriel Sargissian, a 24-year-old countryman of Aronian, who recently won an eight-player round robin by an absurd 2½ point margin, with a a 3021 performance rating. In his Thursday night lecture our Playchess trainer Dennis Monokroussos looks at a key game in which Sargissian answers the time-honored Ruy Lopez Marshall question.

Vadim Milov leads in President's Cup in Baku

5/8/2007 – The event is dedicated to the Azerbaijan's late President Heydar Aliyev and is taking place from May 2nd to 12th. There are 53 foreign participants, with 12 players in the event rated 2600 or higher. Top seeds are Nigel Short, Vadim Milov, Loek van Wely and Arkadij Naiditsch. Fischer protests against film documentary

5/8/2007 – World Champion Bobby Fischer is upset about the production of a documentary film about him. It is entitled Vinur minn Bobby (“My Friend Bobby”) and is being prepared by Icelandic cinematographers and Saemundur Pálsson, a former bodyguard and friend of Fischer. The material used in the film, according to the Fischer support group, was obtained by fraud.

Drama in Yerevan – Aronian wins Rapid match 4:2

5/7/2007 – World Champion Vladimir Kramnik was trailing by two points, and on the final day he almost pulled off an historic save. In both games he had a forced mate on the board, and in both cases, plagued by time constraints, he went on to almost lose the game. Yerevan shocker: Aronian wins both games against Kramnik

5/6/2007 – The rapid chess match in Yerevan is turning into the proverbial slugfest. After winning game two the Armenian star Levon Aronian won the next two games as well (when is the last time that Vladimir Kramnik lost three in a row?) to take a commanding lead. Tomsk leads in the Russian Team Championships

5/6/2007 – The team that has Viktor Bologan as a reserve player (!) has won all its matches so far, and collected eight match and 16 board points. Tomsk-400 is ahead of Ural, with Radjabov, Grischuk, Shirov, Akopian, and others. Average Elo 2701, vs 2692 for Tomsk. And did we mention: Karpov and Korchnoi are playing in the same team! Yerevan: Kramnik and Aronian win their white games

5/5/2007 – The rapid chess match in Yerevan, Armenia, between Vladimir Kramnik and Levon Aronian began with two exciting, impressive games. In the first the world champion smashed his opponent's Marshall in ground-breaking style, in the second Aronian outmaneuvered his Russian opponent in a 76-move game. Rapid chess match Kramnik vs Aronian begins today

Garry Kasparov makes TIME 100 list

5/4/2007 – Once a year Time Magazine compiles a list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Oprah Winfrey made the list a record five times, Bill Gates four times, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela and Condoleezza Rice three times. The 2007 list which hits the newsstands today includes a chess player who today is "leading a lonely fight for greater democracy in Russia." Details.

Foreign raiders led the way in Sydney

5/3/2007 – April 2007. Sydney. Down Under. This is where it happened, the first ever Sydney International Open Chess Tournament (SIO), dubbed the strongest chess tournament ever held in Australia. The event attracted a total of 143 participants, with representatives from four different continents: Europe, South America, Asia, and of course, Oceania. Russian Team Championships in Sochi

Chess Classic Mainz 2007 – Vishy Anand to play Chess960

5/1/2007 – The annual Chess Classic in Mainz will be held from August 13 to 19, 2007. The format has changed, with Anand, Aronian, Kasimdzhanov and Bacrot playing in two tournaments, one classical rapid and one Chess960 (Fischer Random). "I find it very comforting that I can play half the event without any opening preparation," says Anand in this big interview.

Miskolc 2007: Annotations of games five and six

4/29/2007 – They were the most exciting games so far in the rapid chess match in Miskolc, Hungary. Vladimir Kramnik's win was "a gorgeous game", so the annotators, worthy of a world champion. In game six Peter Leko struck back with a grittly determined win to narrow the gap to one point. "We can expect sparkling fight on the last day," says GM Ferenc Berkes in his extensive game annotators.
