Cairns Cup: Humpy and Dzagnidze score convincing wins

2/8/2020 – The second edition of the Cairns Cup kicked off Friday at the Saint Louis Chess Club. Humpy Koneru and Nana Dzagnidze (pictured) were the first ones to get full points, as they defeated Carissa Yip and Valentina Gunina respectively. Queen for a Day: An Interview with Lauren Goodkind

2/8/2020 – Lauren Goodkind took some special education classes in high school and has had a speech impediment since she was two years old. Now, at age 36, her US Chess rating is 1878. Her twin sister Barbara's rating is 1818, putting both in the top 8% of all US Chess-rated players. Coronavirus keeps Wei Yi grounded at home

2/7/2020 – The Chinese grandmaster is healthy, but the virus' spread has forced the cancellation of many international flights and, for the second year running, Wei Yi has had to pull out of the Prague Masters just days in advance. He will be replaced by the current top junior in the world, GM Alireza Firouzja from Iran, who now lives in France. Revisiting the 8th Olympiad in Buenos Aires

2/7/2020 – For 38 years, JUAN SEBASTIAN MORGADO was the manager of a chess shop in Argentina. A collector of national and international magazines, he compiled as much info as he could get his hands on regarding the 1939 Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires. Now he has published his findings in "El impresionante Torneo de Ajedrez de las Naciones de 1939", a detailed account divided in three volumes. He sent us a synopsis.

Youth Team Championship in Thessaloniki, Greece

2/6/2020 – The European Chess Union (ECU) invites all National Chess Federations of ECU to participate in the European Youth Team Championships 2020, organised from July 9th (arrivals) to 17th (departures). It takes place in the incredibly beautiful Greek sea-side hotel Lazart. It is a seven-round Swiss, with two open sections and two sections for the girls teams. Don't miss it: the registration deadline is May 9th 2020.

2/6/2020 – Starting Friday, most of the world's best female players will play the 2nd Cairns Cup in Saint Louis. The field is led by World Champion Ju Wenjun. The tournament winner will receive USD $45,000 from the total prize fund of $180,000. Rounds begin daily at 19:00 UTC (20:00 CET / 14:00 EST) and the games will be broadcast live with commentary.

Hort stories: Remembering Tony Miles

2/5/2020 – Tony Miles was the first English Grandmaster and in the 1980s one of the best players from the West. In 1980, at a tournament in Skara, he tried 1.e4 a6!? against Anatoly Karpov and defeated the World Champion in a famous game. Kramnik and Gelfand train super-talents

2/3/2020 – Last August former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik trained six Indian super-talents in Geneva. They went on to score remarkable tournament success and GM norms, attributing their performance directly to the training session.
