Assaubayeva and M. Muzychuk miss chances

Going into the final round of the Tbilisi Women's Grand Prix, 5 out of 10 participants have chances of winning the title. The frontrunners are Bibisara Assaubayeva and Alina Kashlinskaya, who have a half point lead over 3 chasers (who are still in the race for first place): Anna Muzychuk, Mariya Muzychuk and Stavroula Tsolakidou.

In Friday's penultimate round, Kashlinskaya joined the lead by defeating Lela Javakhishvili from the white side of a Nimzo-Indian Defence. The hard-fought game lasted 71 moves, with the Polish IM showing good play in the opening and strong nerves to patiently convert her advantage in a technical endgame.

M. Muzychuk, who entered the round tied for second place with Kashlinskaya and 3 more players, failed to mimic Kashlinskaya's success, as she missed a big chance to join the leading pack in her game with black against Alexandra Kosteniuk. Similarly, Assaubayeva failed to convert a clearly advantageous position while playing white against Tsolakidou.

Round 8 also saw A. Muzychuk and R. Vaishali scoring full points. The older of the Muzychuk sisters remains in contention for tournament victory, while Vaishali recovered from the consecutive losses she suffered in rounds 5 and 6.

In the final round, which starts 2 hours earlier than usual on Saturday, Assaubayeva and Kashlinskaya will both play with the black pieces.
