Tromso: Round One

by Alejandro Ramirez
8/2/2014 – Things went completely as expected in round one of the Olympiad, most top teams taking home a 4-0 first round win without many difficulties. We bring you an interview with our player of the day, Parimarjan Negi from India, and an overview of a relatively easy round. Perhaps with the exception of Armenia-Japan which was almost a big surprise.

Things have started and the chess is hot!

Some matches were certainly more difficult than others. Russia had no problem dispatching the team from Jordan.  However on team board three things were not so clear. The defending champions, Armenia, were facing Japan - a theoretically easy win. However at some points things looked really bad for the higher rated team. Their board four played a very questionable opening and was strategically lost, while Movsesian...

Somehow or another Armenia ended up winning the match 4-0 regardless. Norway had a bit of a hiccup as their board four lost and Jon Ludvig Hammer only managed a draw in board three, making the match a close 2.5-1.5 against Yemen.

With the huge gap of rating in some of the encounters it is not strange to see that there was not a single upset in the match points in the Women's section. Despite that in many individual matches there were some upsets, including a close call when Portugal scored 1.5 points on Kazakhstan, a Women's section powerhouse. Most matches were simply very one-sided:

Tomorrow's round should also heavily favor the top teams. However there will be many interesting games; for example Hungary will be playing Venezuela who fields the strong GM Eduardo Iturrizaga on their first board, only one more upset besides that and the match could be good for the Latin Americans. That being said, it is expected that the top twenty teams move to 2-0.

The case is the same in the Women's section. None of the matches will be "easy" but it is hard to say that there will be more than one upset in the top twenty matches, if that. That being said - chess is all about surprises!
