Game of the Week: Van Delft vs Paulet

by Merijn van Delft
3/11/2020 – Dynamic themes from IM Merijn van Delft's recent efforts in the Dutch and Belgian leagues. Instructive examples for all! | The live show is free to watch, and available on-demand for ChessBase Premium account holders (but FREE for a limited time!). Merijn is live this week starting at 19:00 UTC (20:00 CET / 4 PM EST).

Scarcely any world champion has managed to captivate chess lovers to the extent Carlsen has. The enormously talented Norwegian hasn't been systematically trained within the structures of a major chess-playing nation such as Russia, the Ukraine or China.

Game of the Week #403

Last weekend I played in two leagues: the Dutch league on Saturday and the Belgian league on Sunday. There was one particular dynamic theme (which I won't reveal yet) that played a key role in both games I played. Both games were very exciting and I will show them in tonight's lecture.

The live show is free to watch, and available on-demand for ChessBase Premium accounts.

Warming-up question: What would you play here with White?

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.h3 e6 7.g4 b5? 7...h6 is normaal. 23.Rd3?? 23.Qd4! Nxd5 24.Rd3 blijkt de manier te zijn. Na de partij dacht ik 23.exd6 Qxd6 maar ook hier moet het weer van 24.Qd4! komen. 23...Ba6?? Na 23...dxe5 staat het opeens weer gelijk. 24.exd6 Qxd6 25.Rd4 Nu is alles weer in orde voor wit. Bb7 26.Bf4 Qc5 27.Kh2 27.Be3 Nc4 28.Bf2 Nxb2 durfde ik niet goed aan vanwege de zwarte e-pion, maar was wel significant beter. 27...Nd7 Dit is te passief. 27...Rb5 was de laatste vechtkans. 28.Qd2 Rb5 29.c3 Qb6 30.Re2 Nc5 31.Rb4 Rxb4 32.cxb4 Nb3 33.Qc3 Ba6 34.Re1 Qf2 35.Bg3 Qf5 36.Re5 Qg6 37.Qc6 f6 38.gxf6 gxf6 39.Re4 Bc8 40.Qxa4 Nc5 41.bxc5 1–0
