8/31/2022 – Eight years ago, in ChessBase Magazine #160, Dorian Rogozenco started his video series "The Classic". With his contribution in the new issue CBM #209 on the game Pillsbury-Lasker (St. Petersburg 1896), the round number of 50 selected top games from the time up to 1945 has been reached. "The Classic" in CBM #209: Pillsbury-Lasker (1896)
Dorian Rogozenco concludes his "Classics" series
For the small anniversary, Rogozenco has saved "a beautiful game" by the then World Champion, Emanuel Lasker. Against the American top player Harry Nelson Pillsbury, Lasker managed an almost perfect game with sacrifice motifs worth seeing. In his video Rogozenco first explains how the World Champion took the initiative in the opening (Tarrasch Defence) and then goes into the key moments of the game in his usual way. In this position
Pillsbury tried in vain to forestall the black attack on his king with 17.f5. But Lasker struck immediately with 17...Rxc3! Because after 18.bxc3 Rc8 19.fxe6 Qxc3 White would immediately be at a loss (Rogozenco explains the tactical details in detail in the video), Pillsbury preferred 18.fxe6. But now came Lasker's second sacrifice, a "completely unexpected move"! Do you have any ideas?
