1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6
A minor surprise, though at this point, having played Carlsen so often, it is really hard for him to impress me with a sideline.
4.g3 Ba6 5.Qc2!? Bb7 6.Bg2 c5 7.d5
This pawn sac is the point of the Qc2 system.
7...exd5 8.cxd5 Nxd5 9.0–0 Be7 10.Rd1 Nc6 11.Qf5!?
To surprise Carlsen, I had to surprise myself. Normally I would opt for a much safer 11.Qa4, which almost by force leads to mass simplifications.
11...Nf6 12.e4 d6!? 13.e5 Qd7
The point of 13...d6!?. Black solves the issue of the hanging f6 knight by tactical means.
14.Qxd7+ I had no recollection of 14.Qc2, which over the board seemed like a much more fascinating option.
14...Nxd7 15.exd6 Bf6 16.Re1+! An important inclusion. White's d6 pawn is not the main trump here, rather it is the fact that the h8 rook is not in the game for the time being.
16...Kf8 17.Nc3 Nb4 I was far more concerned about the much more strategically complex option with Bxc3!?, ruining my queenside pawn structure.
18.Ne5!?
Deviating unknowingly from Carlsen-Pelletier 2008. I felt this was an excellent practical decision and was certain that now White is free rolling, thanks to the bishop pair and flexible pawn structure on the queenside.
18...Nxe5 19.Bxb7 Rd8 20.Rd1 Black has to work to win my weak d-pawn and in the meantime White will try to push b4 somewhere and get more than enough compensation. That was sort of the general thought I had and in the game it worked out in the most perfect way.
20...Nc4 21.d7! Nc2 The alternative would be 21...Ke7!? which eventually led to a draw in a correspondence game from 2016.
22.Rb1 Nd4? 22...Ne5! Black should keep the knight on c2 for now, preventing the b4 push.
23.b4! Rxd7? 23...Ne5! Black has to pick up the d7 pawn with the knight, trying to reinforce the c5 pawn.
24.Bd5! Nd6 25.bxc5 bxc5 26.Ba3 Ke7
27.Bxc5?! The cleanest was. 27.Re1+! Kd8 28.Bxc5 The h8 rook still can't enter the game, White has already regained material balance and the powerful bishops are raging.
27...Ne6! 28.Bb4 a5? Desperation, also overlooking my strong 30th move.
29.Bxa5 Rc8 30.Na4!
Nb6 is looming and Bb4, pinning the knight again is a potential issue as well.
30...Nc4 31.Rbc1 Be5 Here I almost fell for the blunder 32.Kg2?? Ne3+! which would give everything away.
32.Bb4+ Kf6 33.Nc5! Nxc5 34.Rxc4 Rdc7 35.Ba5!
After 35...Rd7 36.Bb6! Black is going to lose material due to the pin along the c-file., so Carlsen resigned.
