The long-standing TePe Sigeman & Co tournament is set to take place on May 3-9 at the Malmö Live Konserthus in Malmö, the sixth-largest city in the Nordic region. Once again, the organizers have focused on inviting fighting players, looking to maximize enjoyment for spectators.
This year, eight grandmasters from eight different countries will fight in a single round-robin event. The time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with 30-second increments from move 1. According to the ‘Malmö rules’, no draws are allowed before move 40.
Starting Tuesday, there will be daily rounds until next Monday, with no rest days included amid the tournament. Except for rounds 5 and 7, the action kicks off at 15.00 CET.
Heading the field is Jorden van Foreest, the defending champion. While living legend Alexei Shirov will be returning after eleven years, top grandmasters Michael Adams and David Navara will be making their debuts in the tournament.
They will be joined by rising stars Arjun Erigaisi and Hans Niemann, who have been showing excellent results in the last year or so. Completing the lineup are local hero Nils Grandelius, who shared first place in 2013, 2017 and 2018, and Saleh Salem, one of the strongest Asian players in the world.
As the organizers put it in their official presentation of the event:
Only players known for playing interesting games have been invited, and we would like to congratulate all chess fans on the opportunity to once again see world-class chess live.
Do not miss the opportunity to visit Malmö Live to follow the games guided by our commentators, Swedish GM Stellan Brynell and Dutch GM Erwin l’Ami. For those not able to visit the playing hall, it will of course be possible to follow all games live on the Internet.
