Robert Ris: "I have a closer look at game 6 of the World Championship match between Ding Liren and Gukesh, which featured a sharp London line that eventually led to a position with kings on opposite sides. In the middle game, White seemed to have gained the upper hand thanks to his control of the centre with its important pieces. The reigning World Champion played too safe and eventually the players had to settle for a draw in a double rook ending.

In this episode I will have a closer look at the modern ideas in this opening, based on an early Bb5, rather than developing the bishop to the more common d3 square. In 2017 I played an interesting game myself, which I will also discuss."

Exercise: What would you do with White?

Feel free to move the pieces on the live diagram!

I believe Ding's "depression" was only a decoy to dampen the preparation of his challenger.
