Video introduction to Mihail Marin's strategy article in CBM #212
"Miles was a positional player who would feel the dynamical and tactical nuances and a combinative player who would know how to build his attack from a solid positional base."
Playing like Anthony Miles - nine strategic tasks
Here is a selection from Mihail Marin's training database (solutions below):
1. Ribli - Miles: How should Black start his positional attack?
2. Miles - Donner: How can White get a huge advantage?
3. Zlotnikov - Miles: How should Black continue?
4. Miles - Lalic: How should White use his slight advance in development?
5. Miles - Speelman: How should White regroup?
6. Miles - Beliavsky (Analysis): Can White prove an advantage?
7. Panchenko - Miles: What should Black do about the attacked knight?
8. Miles - Panno: How did Miles shatter Black's optimism?
9. Langeweg - Miles: How should Black proceed?
Solutions (detailed in Mihail Marin's database in CBM #212)
1. 19...Ba4! The main threat is ...Rc3. 2. 19.Na2! White prepares to invade through c6. 3. 15...f4! Black prepares to open the f-file. 4. 11.dxc5! White invites the exchange of Black's most active piece, while also opening the centre. 5. 22.Nb1! clears the c-file, the knight heads for f3. 6. 21.Bxe5! White needs to shatter the pawn chain. 7. 17...Kf8! The knight is best placed on e7. The exchange on e7 would bring White nothing. 8. 28.Rc1!! indirectly pins the d5-pawn. 9. 20...e4! The pawn sacrifice secures Black activity.

Answer by Jan Markos: Such a draw offer by Black so early in the game is a bit inappropriate. I would guess Black wants to bail out of the game before it becomes clear that White is better. With many pieces on the board, White might still get confused. In fact, White has a simple way to a better endgame here. Therefore Sethuraman declined the draw offer and later won the game against Gupta.
