Starting Monday: Norway Chess introduces parallel women’s event

5/26/2024 – The 12th edition of the Norway Chess super-tournament will take place from May 27 to June 7 at SR-Bank’s main building in Stavanger. A noteworthy addition is the introduction of the world’s inaugural equal female tournament, the Norway Chess Women’s Tournament, with an identical number of players, the same format and an equivalent prize fund. Both world champions — Ju Wenjun and Ding Liren — will participate besides local hero and world number one Magnus Carlsen.

Two double round-robins

For the 12th consecutive year, the prestigious Norway Chess tournament will unfold from May 27 to June 7 at SR-Bank’s main building in Stavanger.

The super-tournament will feature six players this year. A noteworthy addition is the introduction of the world’s inaugural equal female tournament, an event which will transpire in the same playing hall as Norway Chess, concurrently, with an identical number of players, the same format and an equivalent prize fund.

Participants this year include reigning world champions Ding Liren and Ju Wenjun, alongside Magnus Carlsen and the previous year’s Norway Chess winner, Hikaru Nakamura.

In a historic occurrence, siblings Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu and Vaishali Rameshbabu will compete side by side in their own super-tournament, marking their debut in Norway Chess and the Norway Chess Women’s Tournament. Vaishali Rameshbabu is the third woman in India to achieve the Grandmaster title, making her and her brother the first brother-sister duo to attain this distinction.

Format

6 players will take part in the tournament.
The tournament is a double-round event with Armageddon deciders.
The tournament consists of 10 rounds.

Time Control

Each player will get 120 minutes on the clock for the whole game, with an increment of 10 seconds starting from move 41.

The time control for the Armageddon game: White gets 10 minutes and Black gets 7 minutes, with an increment for both players of 1 second per move starting from move 41.

Draw by Mutual Agreement

Players are not allowed to agree to a draw until at least 30 moves have been made by each player. This rule does not apply to Armageddon games.

Armageddon

If the classical game is drawn, an Armageddon game will be played. It shall start within 20 minutes of the conclusion of the classical game. The player with the white pieces will continue with White in Armageddon.

  • Loss in the classical game: 0 points
  • Draw in the classical game & win Armageddon: 1½ points
  • Draw in the classical game & loss Armageddon: 1 point
