In June this year Alexei Shirov met the Dutch top player Jorden van Foreest in Maastricht for a mini-match over four classical games and won surprisingly clearly with 3.5:0.5. Shirov comments in detail on the first game of the match in his video analysis lasting almost an hour. His opening choice is already remarkable: normally - and this has been the case for 10 years - Shirov exclusively resorts to the Botwinnik System in the Semi-Slav with 5.Bg5. In this game, however, after the moves 5...h6 6.Bh4 dxc4 7.e4 with 7…g5 he decided to go for the Moscow Variation after a very long break. In his analysis he goes into various nuances of the opening and explains, for example, why after 8.Bg3 b5 9.Be2 Bb7 10.0-0 Nbd7 11.Ne5 he prefers the continuation 11...h5, so far rarely chosen at GM level, over the standard move 11...Bg7. "Since this game actually finished quite well for me I would like to say that I can recommend the Moscow Variation as much as the Botvinnik Variation for those who like sharp openings with Black." Mihail Marin analyses the game Caruana vs. Gukesh from the 2022 Chess Olympiad, providing an appetiser for the upcoming ChessBase Magazine #210, in which numerous strong players will comment on their best games from Chennai. Even if Caruana lost this game in the end - in the opening the American once again showed himself well prepared and after the pawn sacrifice 8.e5!? gained a clear advantage. In his video, Marin explains on the basis of different variations how the activity of White’s pieces secures control on the board. But after Gukesh's advance on the kingside with 16...g5 and 17...h5, Caruana missed the correct continuation (18.Nc5) and let his opponent get better and better into the game.
