Just days away from claiming his eighth World Blitz Championship title, Magnus Carlsen is reportedly getting married this weekend. The Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang (VG) has revealed that the chess superstar is set to wed Ella Victoria Malone, who has been seen accompanying the multiple-time world champion at recent events, including the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in New York.
Top trainers strongly recommend regular study of well-explained classical games to improve your understanding of chess in the long term. 33 modern classics are explained in details on this video course.
The announcement comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding Carlsen. Following his and Ian Nepomniachtchi's proposal to share the World Blitz title, a video surfaced in which Carlsen joked that they could "just play short draws until they give up" if their suggestion wasn't accepted. The incident sparked widespread debate, especially after FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky reposted the clip on X with the caption "GOAT?" It should be noted that Carlsen was very critical of Sutovsky's handling of the incident related to a dress code violation (a.k.a. "jeans-gate") leading to his withdrawal from the World Rapid.
The couple confirmed the news to VG through their mutual friend Magnus Barstad, but they have chosen to keep details about the time and place of their wedding under wraps. They wish to celebrate their special day in peace, but as VG understands, the ceremony will take place this weekend. Malone, who has maintained a low profile in the media, has taken on an increasingly vital role in his support team.
According to VG, Malone helped finalise a clothing deal with G-STAR earlier this week. Malone, who has an American father and a Norwegian mother, grew up in Oslo and now lives with Carlsen in Tjuvholmen, one of Oslo's most prestigious areas and a site of Carlsen's real estate investments.
