Legends & Prodigies: David Antón scores twice to take sole lead

9/10/2026 – After six draws the previous day, the players at the Legends & Prodigies tournament in Madrid seemed ready for a fight: rounds four and five produced just one draw in six games. Faustino Oro beat Ivan Sokolov before drawing with Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara, while David Antón scored two wins, defeating Diego Flores and Sokolov. Faustino Oro remains unbeaten after day three, but David Antón has moved half a point ahead of the 12-year-old grandmaster. The Spaniard won both his games on Wednesday, beating Diego Flores and Ivan Sokolov.

After five rounds, David Antón leads with 4/5, having scored three wins and two draws. Oro is half a point behind on 3½/5. All three games in round four were decisive.

In round five, Oro played the only draw.

David Antón takes the lead

In round 4 on Wednesday morning, David Antón beat Flores with White. In a King's Indian, he contained Black's attempts at counterplay before taking over the initiative. He was better throughout and went on to score a convincing win. Oro kept pace by beating Ivan Sokolov, leaving the two players tied for the lead on 3/4.

In the afternoon, in round 5, David Antón moved into sole first place by beating Sokolov with Black.

And Black won quickly and convincingly.

At the same time, Oro drew with Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara in an Alapin that remained balanced throughout. Last year's winner therefore enters the second half of the tournament half a point behind the leader. Double rounds will be played on Thursday and Friday, followed by the final round on Saturday.

Today, David Antón first faces bottom-placed Cuenca with White, followed by Martinez Alcantara, who is one point behind the leader on 3/5. Oro will play Flores and then Cuenca.

60m The Two Knights

This entry into the 60 minutes series concentrates on the Modern variation of the Italian game where White opens the centre early : 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Nf6 4 d4 exd4 5 e5!. This line can be reached by various move orders, most frequently from the Scotch 3 d4 exd4 4 Bc4. It's a sharp variation and Grandmasters such as Evgeny Sveshnikov have used it frequently,with very good results. It's a perfect line for club players to adopt which is relatively easy to learn and which contains many traps. All the main responses are covered here, including 5...d5, 5...Ng4 and 5...Ne4 and the conclusion is that is is difficult for Black to equalize in a straightforward way. Problems are being posed, which over the board might prove tough to solve.
