This year, KCF Academy collaborated with the World Cadet Chess Championship 2024 in Montesilvano, Italy and the World Youth Rapid & Blitz Championships 2024 in Čatež, Slovenia, to spotlight the challenges faced in training young chess talents.

The world of competitive chess is filled with extraordinary talent, especially among young players. IGM Adrian Mihalčišin in his reflections on the World Cadet Championship in Montesilvano highlights some critical issues young chess players encounter:

  • Missing Opponent’s Tactics
One of the most frequent pitfalls for young players is failing to recognize their opponent's tactical ideas. Despite the abundance of high-quality tactical exercises available today, many young competitors still struggle with basic tactical awareness.

  • Lack of Knowledge of Classic Games
A major gap in the training of young players is their unfamiliarity with the strategies embedded in classic games. This leads to a poor understanding of typical plans in openings. Classic games are a treasure trove of strategic insights, and studying them can help players internalize fundamental chess principles and build a strong foundation.

  • Susceptibility to Opening Tricks
Many young players are vulnerable to simple traps in the opening phase. This issue stems from inadequate preparation and a lack of understanding of opening principles. A more disciplined approach to studying openings and learning how to avoid common pitfalls can greatly benefit players in this area.

  • Weakness in Endgame Play
Perhaps the most glaring weakness among young chess players is their lack of proficiency in endgames. Modern time controls, with only 30 seconds per move, make this even harder. But trainers are often too busy with openings and analyzing games to focus on endgames.
