3/4/2024 – The Karel Janecek Open, which takes place as part of the Prague Chess Festival, features a number of grandmasters, but after five of nine rounds an IM is in the lead with 5 out of 5: Xiang Zeyu from China. Prague Chess Festival, Karel Janecek Open, Round 5

Born in 1999, Xiang Zeyu is internationally not particularly well-known. He became IM in 2018, after which he played less. With a current rating of 2407, he is ranked 59th in China in the active player rankings and started in Prague as number 29 in the seeding list. However, since he began the Open at the Prague Chess Festival with 5 wins in a row, he has a current Elo performance of 3008.

Among the eight chasers with 4.5 out of 5 is the young Indian A.R. Ilamparthi, born in 2009, U14 World Champion 2022, who also won the Solution Tournament in Prague, one of the numerous side events of the Prague Chess Festival.

Johannes Fischer was born in 1963 in Hamburg and studied English and German literature in Frankfurt. He now lives as a writer and translator in Nürnberg. He is a FIDE-Master and regularly writes for KARL, a German chess magazine focusing on the links between culture and chess. On his own blog he regularly publishes notes on "Film, Literature and Chess".
