Isle of Man Rd 6 - Pavel Eljanov leads with 5.5/6

by Johannes Fischer
10/7/2016 – Alexey Shirov started the Isle of Man tournament with 4.0/4 but in round five surprisingly decided to use the option of a "bye". He did not play the round and took a rest which brought - or cost, according to perspective - him half a point. In round six Shirov was back at the board but all his fire seemed gone. He played with Black against Pavel Eljanov and found no recipe against Eljanov's cool and creative positional play and was convincingly outplayed. After six rounds Eljanov is now sole leader with 5.5/6.

13.Nb1! A surprising - and surprisingly strong - retreat. White sends his knight back to its initial square to exploit the weaknesses on d5 and b5. Bb4 14.c3 Bd6 15.Na3 Bxa3 16.Rxa3 White now plays with his bishops against Black's knights and has a clear strategic advantage. Eljanov's seemingly innocuous opening strategy turned out to be a success. Rc8 17.Rb3 b6 18.Rb5 Nc5 19.d4 exd4 20.Qxd4 Nfe4 21.Bf4 Nd6
Black gives a pawn to reduce White's pressure and to entertain hopes of counterplay. But Eljanov shows good technique and convincingly converts his extra-pawn. 22.Bxd6 Qxd6 23.Bxd5 Rfd8 24.Rd1 Qg6 25.Qg4 Qxg4 26.hxg4 Nxa4 27.Rd4 Nc5 28.Rxb6 Kf8 29.g5 Rb8 30.Rxb8 Rxb8
31.Rf4! White refuses to defend his b-pawn passively and counterattacks instead. He realised that Black's a-pawn looks more dangerous than it is. Ke7 32.Rxf7+ Kd6 33.c4 g6 34.Rxh7 Rxb2 35.Rg7 a4 36.Rxg6+ Ke5 37.Rg7 a3 38.Ra7 a2 39.g6

Alexey Shirov

With this smooth win against Eljanov took the sole lead with 5.5/6. Half a point behind follow three players with 5.0/6 each. One of them is Fabiano Caruana who won in round six with Black against Women's World Champion Hou Yifan. An interesting game in which both sides tried to seize the initiative by willingly giving material.

Bxa3 11.Bxe6 Bxb2 12.Bxf7+ Rxf7 13.Bxb2 Qd7 14.c4 White prevents d5 and opens the diagonal a1-h8 for her bishop. Raf8 15.Nh4 Kh7 16.f4!?
An interesting and energetic pawn sacrifice. White gives the f-pawn to mobilise her center. 16...exf4 17.d4 Re8 18.Qb1 Kg8 19.Nf3 Rfe7 20.d5 Ne5 21.Bxe5 Rxe5!?
Black counters White's interesting and energetic pawn-sacrifice with an interesting exchange sacrifice that gives him good play and attacking chances. 22.Nxe5 Rxe5 23.Qxb7 f3! Black is an exchange down but has good attacking chances, particularly in a practical game. 24.Qb3 fxg2 25.Qf3 Qe8 26.Ra2 Nxe4 27.Rae2 Ng5 28.Qg4? This gives Black a tactical opportunity to reach a winning endgame. Better was 28.Qxg2 e.g. Nxh3+ 29.Kh2 Ng5 30.Rxe5 dxe5 31.Qg4 e4 32.Kg2 Qxa4 with a complicated position that the engines consider to be equal.
How does Black continue now?

Fabiano Caruana

Hou Yifan

The Isle of Man tournament is an extremely strong open and every round a lot of interesting games are played. In the following game the young Indian Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram had a chance to play a nice positional queen sacrifice.
