Grivas on the Chess Olympiad 2024 (1)

by Efstratios Grivas
9/30/2024 – The Chess Olympiad 2024 was held in beautiful Budapest, Hungary, 10 to 23 September 2024. It was the 45th edition for the Open Section and the 30th for the Women Section. As it is natural, a lot of interesting games were played, out of a total of nearly 8,000 games! Here are some treats, selected and annotated by international trainer Eftratios Grivas.

Your personal chess trainer. Your toughest opponent. Your strongest ally.
FRITZ 20 is more than just a chess engine – it is a training revolution for ambitious players and professionals. Whether you are taking your first steps into the world of serious chess training, or already playing at tournament level, FRITZ 20 will help you train more efficiently, intelligently and individually than ever before.

Our first game comes from the 7th round and from the match India-China, which was extremely important for the final standings. FIDE World Champion, Chinese Ding Liren skipped this match (after a rest day as well!), which was rather weird for such circumstances. His World Championship challenger D. Gukesh scored the decisive point (all other three games ended in a draw) and India won 2½-1½.

The next game contains an interesting novelty and a fierce attack. And in my opinion was the most spectacular game of the entire event.

More musings from the 2024 Olympiad to come
