Game of the Week #655

After five rounds, Praggnanandhaa and Abdusattorov lead the Tata Steel Masters with 4 out of 5. Erigaisi had a dramatically bad start and the three Dutchmen did not get off to a good start either.

Gukesh, as the new World Champion, is of course trying to catch up with Caruana in the world rankings. Our game of the week, Fedoseev vs. Caruana, was very relevant in this respect. The game was heading towards a draw for quite some time, but around the time of the time control the game quickly got out of hand.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
