Game of the Week #647

Of course we are talking about the World Championship! Much to the relief of many, Ding found his form just in time to score an absolutely brilliant win with the French Defence (!) in the first round.

Gukesh must have been extremely nervous, so a solid draw in the second round was important for him.

In the third game, Ding once again wasted a lot of time in the early stages of the game, but did quite well. We will discuss what happened next in our Game of the Week.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week's show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
