Game of the Week #637: S. Sjugirov - A. Erigaisi

by Merijn van Delft
9/19/2024 – Arjun Erigaisi is officially India's number 1, but at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest he is playing for the Indian team on board 3, behind Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa. This seems to have been a good decision, as Erigaisi started the Olympiad with 6.0/6! In his new Game of the Week show, Merijn van Delft takes a look at Erigaisi's win over Sanan Sjugirov in round 6. | Merijn's show is available on-demand with a ChessBase Premium Account. Game of the Week #637

India has a dream team at the Olympics: Gukesh can become the youngest World Champion in history in November, so of course he is on board 1. They typically put their most solid man on board 2, which is Praggnanandhaa. The natural born killer is on 3, which is Erigaisi, even though he is the highest rated player. Having Vidit on board 4, who was a candidate earlier this year, completes the picture. Our game of the week is Erigaisi's endgame squeeze from round 6.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week's show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
