Game of the Week #638

True champions can win on demand. Gukesh is only 18 years old, but he won the Candidates earlier this year and now won the Olympiad with his team, scoring an amazing 9 out of 10 on the first board. His performance earned him 30 rating points and he is now 5th in the world rankings, just behind Nakamura, Erigaisi (!) and Caruana. In the penultimate round, India beat the USA and our game of the week is Gukesh-Caruana, another win on demand, securing two gold medals.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
