Game of the Week #634

The Sinquefield Cup was a significant event in terms of who is absolute world-class at the moment and who is dropping out for now. Gukesh drew all his games, probably because he is saving his prep for the World Championship match. Ding did much worse, just like Ian Nepomniachtchi and Anish Giri.

Our Game of the Week is between the two stars of the moment: Fabiano Caruana and Alireza Firouzja. The latter had a tough Candidates Tournament earlier in the year, but seems to be in great shape now and came out on top.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week's show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
