Game of the Week #629

This is the third time in five weeks that we are going to study a game by Max Warmerdam - and the reason is that he has won his third tournament in a row!

After winning in Teplice and the Dutch Championship, Max now won in Brasov, further rising to a 2676 rating and 51st in the world rankings. Meanwhile, fellow Dutchman Jorden van Foreest got inspired and is basically winning everything in Canada (he now has a 2696 rating and is 36th in the world rankings).

Our Game of the Week is Max's impressive last-round win in Brasov, against Adam Kozak.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

A. Kozak - M. Warmerdam, Brasov Grand Prix 2024
Position after 11.Bg2

This week's show

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
