Game of the Week #611

The German Bundesliga will likely be won by the very strong team of SC Viernheim, ahead of OSG Baden-Baden, who have been dominating the German top league for many years. Our Game of the Week was played between two Dutch grandmasters, Lucas van Foreest and Erik van den Doel.

Lucas played the exchange variation of the Slav, but Erik played very patiently and suddenly managed to get an edge. Errors were made by both sides, but there were many instructive moments.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
