Game of the Week #607

Germany has by far the strongest team in the Mitropa Cup and it has won all its matches so far. Only Keymer isn't playing, but otherwise it's all young top grandmasters. Switzerland is in second place, but their meeting ended 3.5-0.5 for Germany and we will study the game on board one between Bluebaum and Georgiadis.

In one of the Dubov variations in the Catalan, Black was instructively punished for an early mistake.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
