Game of the Week #602

After his World Championship match against Ian Nepomniachtchi in April, Ding Liren only played in the Superbet Classic right after, an event which didn’t go very well for him.

This week the World Champion will participate in Wijk aan Zee, so everyone is very curious about his current form. An important indication was given by the 1st China Chess King event, a knockout rapid event played last week. While Yu Yangyi won convincingly, we will have a look at the semifinal Wang Hao v. Ding Liren, to get a glimpse of the World Champion’s play.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
