by Merijn van Delft
7/14/2025 – In the new episode of his Game of the Week show, Merijn van Delft looks at a game from the Dutch Championship that helped Jorden Van Foreest to win the title: Van Foreest's win again Sergei Tiviakov, who is notoriously hard to beat. | Merijn's show is available on-demand with a ChessBase Premium Account. In this Fritztrainer: “Attack like a Super GM” with Gukesh we touch upon all aspects of his play, with special emphasis on how you can become a better attacking player.

Game of the Week #679

The Dutch Championship was played in an exciting knockout format similar to the World Cup. While Jorden van Foreest is the favourite to win the men's section (Giri is not participating), his sister Machteld is the favourite to win the women's section.

In the first round, Jorden faced his former trainer, the notoriously hard-to-beat Sergei Tiviakov. Jorden produced an impressive positional masterpiece in this match, which is our Game of the Week.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

This week's show

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
