Game of the Week #596

The Sinquefield Cup had a very slow start with draws in the first couple of rounds, but after that, the fireworks began to appear. With two Candidates spots still at stake (FIDE Circuit and rating) the tension became extremely high.

At this point, Alireza Firouzja and Anish Giri seem to be the unfortunate ones, while Wesley So and Leinier Dominguez seem to be on their way to getting the coveted spots, which would mean there would be four Americans in the Candidates next year!

We will have a look at the top pairing, Caruana vs So, as our Game of the Week.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
